Tampa Bay Agatized Coral with custom stand
While Agatized Coral is found in other locations around the world like Indonesia, Florida is the only location producing hollow specimens with botryoidal and druzy chalcedony formations inside!
The process of agatization began as the coral skeletons were buried under layers of sediment. Groundwater rich in silica, a key component of agate, percolated through the sediment and gradually replaced the original calcium carbonate structure of the coral with silica. This replacement process occurred on a microscopic level, preserving the intricate details of the coral’s structure.
As the silica-rich groundwater continued to flow through the sediment, it also deposited additional layers of silica, gradually building up the agate within the coral. This process took millions of years, resulting in the formation of solid agate-filled coral fossils.
